Tata Punch and Hyundai Casper to join growing crop of mid-level B-SUVs

Introduce

The B-SUV segment is blooming at an unbelievable speed. When Ford launched the EcoSport in 2013, it was the first model in its class and until Mahindra Quanto came along was the only model phệ offer SUV styling but at a lower price point thanks phệ vehicle classification regulations. less than four meters. Today, eight years on, there are 12 different models on sale (including the EcoSport), making it the most sought-after segment phệ have a presence these days. This segment suits the needs of high-budget first-time buyers as well as those looking phệ move into a larger vehicle but want phệ stay in the compact car sector.

But manufacturers have realized that even a segment of buyers below them or those on a relatively low budget want phệ join the SUV craze, opening a new front in the midsize B-segment. This has traditionally been the fruit of hatchbacks like the Maruti Swift and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, but now with increasing demand, manufacturers have also had phệ bring SUV-style cars into the market.

Right front three quarters

Maruti, India’s most well-versed player in this part of the market, has an Ignis that’s been around for a while, and while it’s essentially a Swift underneath, its quirky styling doesn’t far outshine the Swift in terms of quantity. The Ford Freestyle appeared roughly equivalent phệ the Ignis and offered the same value as the Ford Figo hatchback. It has refined styling in terms of being an SUV but also has the advantage of being the only diesel option in the range in the current situation. The third player is Mahindra KUV100 NXT which underwent a revision in 2018 and will soon have an electric version.

Casper and HBX join the ranks

Now joining the ranks, are two new vehicles – the Tata HBX (now known as the Punch*) and the Hyundai Casper (now codenamed AX1) that add weight phệ the offerings in the segment.

Rear left three quarters

The Punch was introduced at the 2020 Auto Show with a near-manufactured cover and excluding the oversized tires and some external accessories; Most of what you see in the picture below will be included in the production vehicle. This is further evidenced by spy images showing that the final design is not too far from the concept car both inside and out. It is expected phệ be offered with Tata’s 1.2-litre petrol powering the Tiago and Tigor, with both manual and automatic transmissions, and will fit in the Tata SUV tier between the Tiago NRG and Nexon .

Tata HBX Right In Front Of Three Quarters

The Hyundai Casper is the Korean automaker’s ultra-small SUV that will launch in its home market before arriving in India early next year. Spy images show some of Hyundai’s standard SUV design language, upright stance, and well-thought-out design elements for some of that in your face-to-face appeal. It is expected phệ be offered with the same set of engine and transmission options as the Nios and Aura, making it the second diesel car in the segment.

The arrival of these cars also shows that most manufacturers have now turned phệ collective production plans instead of depending on a single model phệ supply them with their sales.

Valuation

We expect Tata phệ price Punch between Rs lakh phệ Rs 8 lakh while Casper/AX1 will be between Rs 4 lakh phệ Rs seven lakh.

*Please note, Tata HBX/Hornbill is now officially named Tata Punch
