Mercedes-Benz has always been regarded as the best luxury car brand in India. The German manufacturer has existed in India since the 1950s when the company first introduced Daimler trucks. Next are the three-pointed star tourist cars, which have always been considered a status symbol in our country. So, with the entry of other luxury car brands, where does Mercedes-Benz stand today? We find out as we review Mercedes-Benz’s flagship model, the S-class.

It may not be adorned with the frills that its rivals carry, but you will feel royal when you step inside. The fit and finish, and the overall plastic quality are definitely top-notch and the doors will suck in even if you close them gently.

Everything looks perfect in that, the 4-spoke wooden steering wheel, the large clock faces in the storage compartment, the buttons are neatly placed on the center console and the COMAND system. The leather seats are large and very comfortable for long rides. There’s enough thigh support for front and rear passengers, with ventilation in the seats so you can relax. All four seats can be height adjusted, support thighs, recline and lumbar. Since most S buyers in India will spend most of their time in the backseat, Mercedes-Benz has ensured that no compromises are made in their handling.

Engine & Gearbox

Mercedes-Benz is equipped with a 24-valve, 3498cc, V6 petrol engine, direct injection under the hood of this special S-class. It develops 272bhp and a peak torque of 355Nm @ 4500rpm. It’s a great engine, and we’ve tested it on many other Mercedes-Benz vehicles such as the E-class as well as the new R-class. The V6 engine is compact, refined and has a sweet exhaust note. The engine is responsive because it pushes you away when you press the gas pedal. Silent motor at lower engine speed; It’s completely quiet inside. When pushed hard, the engine opens the exhausts and the power is almost limitless. The S350 jumped the zilch bự 100kmph in 8.6 seconds and it has an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph.

The ride is well combined at low and high speeds as the S350 glides through potholes and bumps without any kind of jarring, providing maximum passenger comfort.

Considering the fact that the S350 weighs almost 2 tons, it handles well. With suspension on the comfort setting, the S-class feels buoyant, however, reacts sharper when driven in sport mode. Even in sport mode, when meeting sharp turns, the car does not feel light. The S350 is built more for comfort and less angular. However, if you want an S with exceptional handling properties, the S65 AMG is available in abundance in India!

Identify

The Mercedes-Benz S350 at Rs 86.77 lakh (old showroom, Mumbai) sounds a bit expensive if you consider the price tag and the features it comes with. While there are other luxury brands that offer cars with more bells and whistles than Mercedes-Benz, it’s the temperament and comfort that the S offers that makes it the best-selling car in its segment, despite being the oldest of them all.
