Mercedes A45 S AMG Drive Review

Introduce

Full disclosure: This is not a review.

Agreed, I drove it out. And I drove it more than 22km. But, within that 22km, the car did its job. I’m more like a passenger; an excited person, yes, but a passenger nonetheless.

This is the Mercedes A45 S AMG, and it is a plump, full-fat AMG unlike the A35 Sedan, which is the bridge between nature and a well of water, the supernatural. It costs Rs 79.50 lakh, ex-factory, all India. And I drove this sublime hatchback on the 11km Natrax highway.

Three quarters front left

I hit 278kmph before exiting the first bank. And then I sat there, with my right foot buried in the carpet, watching the railing go by at breakneck speed, with the car and the track not even requiring me phệ steer.

Subcutaneous

Now before I tell you how that feels, here’s a quick look at what makes the A45 S a supernatural being.

The A45 may have a four-cylinder engine, but this two-litre turbocharged unit churns out a staggering 421bhp of extra power. The peak torque at 500Nm is even more astonishing.

Shot Engine

The power of this engine is then combined with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, sending power phệ all four wheels. Of course, it’s not always the same. However, the brain inside only sends the correct amount phệ the correct wheel phệ maintain the grip màn chơi of the organs in the body.

Front row seats

Playing an equally important role in this fascinating story is the suspension. The car runs on MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link thiết đặt at the rear. However, it is the adaptive dampers that give the A45 S a little more usability. One can reduce the damping speed phệ get a firmer thiết đặt for track use, or have a more supple ride thanks phệ the quicker, less restrained moving damping action.

Rear left three quarters

And don’t forget the steering wheel. With only two locks phệ lock, it is a responsive device. And packed with a bit of enhancement for an extra sporty, connected feel.

Bells and whistles

The Mercedes A45 S AMG may be dominated by speed and performance and leech-like handling, but it is a Mercedes at the end of the day. And one that is anything but affordable.

dashboard

No wonder it comes with lots of bells and whistles. Power-adjustable seats, multi-zone climate control, MBUX, a detailed multimedia system with Merc’s latest touchscreen, HUD and an improved multifunction steering wheel.

Exhaust pipe

In addition phệ the usual functions for operating the multimedia and driver information systems – and cruise control – the A45 S has a rotary knob. It is your shortcut phệ choose the driving mode phệ your liking. From Comfort phệ Race, all it takes is one click phệ change the way the engine, throttle, transmission, suspension, and ESP system behave and react.

Then, of course, there are plenty of safety kits on board. In addition phệ six airbags, ESP, and a quick-response but non-intrusive ABS system, the A45 also comes with features like automatic braking, blind-spot recognition, and lane-departure warning.

So how is it phệ drive?

Fast. Very fast. And it also sounds great.

Front view

As for the part I mentioned earlier about the A45 S driving itself at 278kmph… well, that’s not entirely true. After all, I’m standing on the gas pedal. So I contributed.

But, other than that, it feels like it doesn’t want any other interference from the driver. The A45 S on that high-speed Natrax track creates a feeling of 278 km/h for pedestrians.

Right front three quarters

It’s just sitting there on the runway, ripping through the air, with a weave or hopscotch or needing phệ make any kind of steering adjustment. It makes it look too easy.

Unyielding, I dived down a lane from the farthest around the corner with the beach, phệ think about something about the A45 S. The accelerator pedal is still completely smooth.

Left view

Now, I need a little more adjustment of the steering wheel on the left side. Now I can feel the A being pressed harder against the runway on the right hand side. And I can finally see the yellow dot on the G watch move phệ the right.

I finally felt indispensable; like I’m so important phệ this 278kmph flat dance that the A45 S and I were in. And then it ended. My two rounds were done. My 22km lap around the high-speed Natrax track in the A45 S was history.

Introduction Full disclosure: This is not a review. Agreed, I drove it flat out. And I drove it for over 22km. But, during those 22km or so, it was the car doing its thing. I was more like a passenger; an excited one, yes, but a passenger, nonetheless. This is the Mercedes A45 S AMG, and it is a full-blown, full-fat AMG unlike the A35 Sedan which is more a bridge between the natural, and the well, the supernatural. It costs Rs 79.50 lakh, ex-showroom, all India. And I drove this supernatural hatchback on the 11km Natrax high-speed track. I hit 278kmph before exiting the first banking. And then I sat there, right foot buried into the carpet, watching the guardrail go by at warp speed, with the car and the track not even needing me phệ work the steering. Under The SkinNow before I tell you what that felt like, here’s a quick drill down on what makes the A45 S a supernatural being. A four-cylinder engine the A45 might have, but this two-litre, turbocharged unit puts out a staggering 421bhp plus of power. The peak torque at 500Nm is even more astounding. This powerhouse of an engine is then mated phệ an eight-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, which sends power phệ all four wheels. Not in equal measure at all times, of course. But, the brain inside sends just the correct amount phệ the correct wheel phệ maintain organ shifting levels of grip. Playing an equally starring role in this gripping story is the suspension. The car runs MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link thiết đặt at the rear. But, it’s the adaptive damping that gives the A45 S that extra bit of usability. One can slow down the damping phệ get a firmer thiết đặt for track use or have a more supple ride courtesy less restrictive, faster moving damping action. And let’s not forget the steering. With barely two turns lock-to-lock it’s a fast reacting unit. And packed with a hint of heft phệ add that sporty, connected feel. The Bells And WhistlesThe Mercedes A45 S AMG might be governed by speed and performance and leech-like handling, but it is a Mercedes at the end of the day. And one that’s anything but affordable. Not surprising then, it does come with a lot of bells and whistles. Electrically adjustable seats, multi-zone climate control, MBUX, a detailed multimedia system with Merc’s latest touchscreen, HUD, and a more evolved multifunctional steering. Apart from the regular functions phệ operate the multimedia and the driver information system – and the cruise control – the steering of the A45 S also comes with a dial. It is your shortcut key phệ choosing the driving mode of your liking. From Comfort phệ Race, all it takes is a click phệ change how the engine, throttle, gearbox, suspension damping, and the ESP behave and react. Then, of course, there’s a plethora of safety kit on board. Apart from six air bags, and ESP, and a fast reacting yet not intrusive ABS system, the A45 also gets features like automatic braking, blind spot recognition, and lane departure warning. So, How Is It Béo Drive?Fast. Very fast. And it also sounds great. As for the bit I mentioned at the start about A45 S driving itself at 278kmph… well, that wasn’t entirely true. I was standing on the throttle pedal, after all. So, I was contributing. But, that apart, it did feel like it did not want any other intervention from the driver. The A45 S on that Natrax high-speed track made 278kmph feel pedestrian. It just sat there on the tarmac, tearing through the air, with nary a weave or hop or the need phệ make any sort of steering corrections. It made it look all too easy. Not phệ give in, I dropped down a lane from the outermost one around the banked corner, phệ give the A45 S something phệ think about. The throttle pedal was still completely mashed. Now, I needed phệ add a hint of steering correction phệ the left. I could now feel the A being pressed harder into the tarmac on the right hand side. And I could finally see the yellow dot on G meter move phệ the right. I finally felt indispensable; like I was crucial phệ this 278kmph flat-out dance that the A45 S and I were involved in. And then, it was over. My two laps were done. My 22km stint around the Natrax high-speed track in the A45 S were history. Pictures by Kapil Angane
