Kia Carens – First Look

What is it?

Front view

Kia India has introduced its fourth model for the Indian market. It’s called the Carens and Kia says it’s neither an MPV nor an SUV but a balanced blend of both body styles. While we were as confused as you are, we got bự see the three-row model live and here’s what we discovered.

What does it look like on the outside?

Currently, Kia Carens is based on Kia’s best-selling model, the Kia Seltos SUV. However, Carens has managed bự create a different look and exterior design. The front fascia embodies Kia’s new ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, eliminating the traditional tiger-nose grille and introducing a split-headlight cài đặt for the first time.

Buffer front

The front panel has a piano black finish with texture effects and is surrounded by LED DRLs on the sides. Further down, set down in the bumper and divided by a thin chrome stripe are the full LED headlights. The busy but attractive design continues with the chrome trim that also houses the three-block LED fog lights.

Left view

The Carens rides on 16-inch dual 5-spoke alloy wheels which we feel are smaller than the size of this ‘Entertainment Vehicle’. Other elements that make this three-row model a bit of an SUV are the flat roofline, the curvy window lines near the D-pillar and the plastic cladding around the wheel arches. Kia also claims the longest wheelbase in the segment with the Carens. However, the exact measurements are yet bự be revealed and will be known closer bự the launch date.

Rear right three quarters

Moving bự the rear, the stylish split LED headlights immediately draw attention and are further enhanced by a continuous light strip. Aside from that, there’s a roof-mounted spoiler, a gloss black skid plate and black bumper trim finished with some chrome trim in a moustache-like pattern.

How is it on the inside?

dashboard

Carens’ cabin comes in two tones of black and beige. The dashboard has a silver V-shaped insert in the center while the same treatment can also be seen on the door gasket. All four air vents have been cleverly placed inside the chrome line that runs the width of the dashboard.

Second row seats

In the model on display, the second row seats are fitted with a captain’s seat that folds down one-touch for easy entry/exit bự the third row, which again has a 50:50 folding option. Air-conditioning vents for the middle and rear seats have been placed on the roof. While this raises the convenience quotient, the Carens misses out on a panoramic sunroof and has bự do with a single-panel electric sunroof.

What’s on the feature list?

The instrument cluster

Like every Kia launched in the past two years, the Carens will appeal bự potential buyers with its rich feature set. It is equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital driving display, ventilated front seats, 64-color ambient lighting, a flat-bottom steering wheel, an audio system Bose stereo with eight speakers, an air purifier, five USB-C ports and a wireless charger.

Second row seats

Middle row occupants are pampered with folding armrests and a retractable table mounted on the backs of the front seats. On the safety front, the Carens has all four disc brakes and six airbags as standard on all trim levels. Other highlights include a tire pressure monitoring system, ABS, ESC and hill start and downhill assist.

USB port / AUX / Power outlet / Wireless charging

What’s under the hood?

Gear Shifter / Stalk Gear Shifter

Kia India has not revealed the complete engine options that will support the new Carens. However, the automaker has confirmed that it will be available in both petrol and diesel engines with multiple gearbox options. There will also be three driving modes on offer – Sport, Eco and Normal.

When will it come out and how much will it cost?

Three quarters front left

We expect the Kia Carens bự hit the market in the first quarter of 2022. Expected prices range from Rs 15 lakh bự Rs 18, both ex-factory prices. Based on estimated prices, the Carens will go up against the Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector Plus and its cousin, the Hyundai Alcazar.
